This item is an antique Chinese wedding basket, dating from the 19th-century Qing Dynasty. It features a bright cinnabar red lacquer finish over wood.
The handle is ornately carved with gold gilding. The box is constructed from wood staves, bound with metal bands, and includes a metal latch. The top is split and the front half comes out, as shown.
These baskets were traditionally used to present gifts to newlyweds during a wedding ceremony.
Date Circa 1870-80's
Mesurements: 13" long x 9 1/2” deep x 13” high
Condition: As can be expected for an item of this age, there are some condition issues. There are a few cracks in the wood, some places where the metal banding has separated from the wood, and overall it is a fragile piece. It is stable at this time, and I will pack it well for shipping! Please see the photos for more information.
