Antique Blue Willow shallow bowls, set of 5. These bowls by Petrus Regout Maastricht Willow were made in late 19th century. Known for its detailed, often dark blue, transferware patterns, this Petrus Regout Maastricht Blue Willow is considered high-quality, collectible Dutch-made porcelain is highly regarded by collectors, particularly items featuring the early "Sphinx" mark.
Transferware dishes were created by printing detailed, intricate designs (such as the blue willow pattern) from engraved copper plates onto wet lightweight (think, tissue like) paper. The inky paper was then pressed onto unglazed (“biscuit") pottery. The transfer technique developed in late 18th-century England allowed for higher production and mass-producing elaborate patterns printed dishes found in detailed chinoiserie. They say the best blue willow is the more inky ones, showing the true inconsistency of the pattern transfer technique. Before the transferware method the only option was to hand paint dishes!
Blue Willow will always have a willow tree, Chinese pine trees, a fence, a pagoda, a boat, and two birds (swallows) in flight. The imagery tells a tragic Chinese legend of forbidden love: Koong-Shee, a wealthy mandarin's daughter, falls for her father's poor clerk, Chang. After escaping their angry father across a bridge, the couple flees by boat, only to be killed by a jealous suitor on a distant island. The gods transform them into immortal lovers, depicted as two doves on the plate.with such a story Blue willow is probably the most iconic of all blue and white patterns.
