This wooden Chinese box is a 19th-century snack box, once presented as a gift for a holiday or special occasion. To the delight of the recipients, the box would have been filled with a bounty of popular snacks like roasted melon seeds, dried fruit, and cinnamon-toasted soybeans.
This presentation box is finished with red-brown lacquer and hand-painted gold decoration of two deer foraging for the fungus of immortality, also known as lingzhi or reishi. Symbols of longevity and rank, when two deer are shown together they form the visual idiom "may all roads be smooth," a common blessing for success in one's career or business. The lacquered finish has become heavily crazed over the years for a fantastic crackled texture.
