Nilo Lanzas (1929-2004) Gator Bait, 2000 Oil on cypress wood cut 11 x 45 x .75 inches
Additional Information:
I purchased this painting at Berta’s and Mina’s Antiquities in New Orleans in April of 2002. The painting was done in Nilo’s studio at this location in 2000. I met Nilo and his daughter (Mina) at the gallery and it was explained to me that Nilo only did a handful of woodcuts in his entire body of work and is considered rare. The eyes of the gator and fish are faux gemstones. The painting depicts Nilo’s childhood memories of fishing at his fathers dairy farm in Nicaragua. He stated that crocodiles would sometimes steal his bait. I have the original bill of sale and a brochure with the artists bio. In that bio, the gallery highlighted that Nilo's work is in several private collections of celebrities and also states that his works are in the permanent public collections of: The New Orleans Museum of Art The Pensacola Museum of Art The Mississippi Museum of Art The Birmingham Museum of Art The painting is signed on the front with initials NL and the back is signed with 3 fingerprints and a signature. Condition seems generally good with one small area at the bottom border where it seems paint chipped out of one of the carving marks. This area is about 1 inch in length. Evidence of this condition in photos.
