Jorge Wilmot was one of the most distinguished artisans of Mexico, and has been credited with the introduction of stoneware and other high fire techniques to the country. His distinctive pottery earned him an international reputation with his pieces being sought after by museums and collectors worldwide. His work is also known for its more austere, Oriental-inspired designs blended with Mexican motifs. He set up a studio in the late 1950s in Tonala, Jalisco, Mexico. Tonalá is the historic ceramic center where Jorge Wilmot established his workshop in the 1950s after studying in Japan. It was there that he introduced high-temperature stoneware firing techniques to traditional Mexican pottery production, transforming the region’s ceramic tradition. Each quail is individually decorated, featuring a rounded, sculptural form with expressive detailing and richly layered surface design in warm tones of ochre, rust, cream, and brown. One example is adorned with rhythmic dotted striping across a speckled ground, while the other displays intricate hand-painted motifs with textured glazing and delicate botanical accents. Though complementary in palette and form, each bird is unique—highlighting Wilmot’s hand and artistic individuality. Both pieces are marked on the underside with Wilmot’s characteristic underglaze blue “W,” confirming authenticity. Grounded yet whimsical, these stylized quail function beautifully as shelf sculptures, tabletop accents, or additions to a curated ceramic collection. Their organic forms and warm palette integrate effortlessly into rustic, modern, and eclectic interiors. Dimensions of larger bird.- 11" x 8" x 10". Dimensions of smaller bird- 9" x 10" x 7".
