An exceptional original oil on board by celebrated American Impressionist Virginia Woolley (1884–1971), a prominent California artist known for her luminous floral and nature compositions.

This striking still life presents a vivid red cardinal perched beneath a glass bell jar, delicately positioned beside a small nest with white eggs and soft feathers. To the left, a graceful magnolia branch with broad green leaves and a fully opened white blossom creates a dramatic counterpoint to the rich, moody background. The interplay of light against the glass dome and the saturated crimson of the bird demonstrate Woolley’s confident brushwork and refined sense of color harmony.

Woolley studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and in Paris before establishing herself in Laguna Beach, where she became an influential figure in the early California art community and helped found the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts. Her works are held in numerous public collections, including the Laguna Art Museum and the High Museum of Art.
