A Santo Figure (Saint) is a religious art form found in Spain and areas that were colonies of the Kingdom of Spain, consisting of wooden or ivory statues that depict various saints. In the Caribbean, drawing on Taíno traditions of carved idols, the Spanish missionaries started the tradition in the 16th century pushing to have Christian saints to pray to in homes. Likely of Caribbean origins, this work is hand-caved and painted with layers of black, red and white paint down to areas of visible wood. This work depicts the Virgin holding Christ.

The charm of these pieces is in the visible history that can be seen especially in the hand-carved details and visible layers of paint applied through the years of use. The Santos held a special place in the home and were often passed down through generations. Villages often had one family known for carving these pieces. By details and style, they can sometimes be attributed to specific makers or families. less
