Pair of “glasplatte” wall lamps by per lütken for holmegaard, denmark, 1970s
designed by per lütken for holmegaard glasværk in the early 1970s, this pair of glasplatte (glass plaque) wall lamps represents a unique fusion of sculptural lighting and danish studio-glass craftsmanship. Lütken, one of holmegaard’s most important designers, created the glasplatte series as expressive art-glass forms that also function as architectural lighting elements.
each lamp consists of a thick, curved panel of handblown frosted glass, distinguished by exceptionally rare white swirling patterns. The multi-tonal surface is achieved through the fusion of differently coloured glass masses, resulting in organic streaks, air bubbles, and crystallised inclusions—details characteristic of holmegaard’s artisanal production methods. As each piece was individually crafted by hand, every lamp is unique in both pattern and structure.
when illuminated, the glass emits a softly diffused glow that accentuates its layered texture and enhances the sculptural quality of the form. The lamps remain visually compelling even when unlit, functioning as wall-mounted glass artworks.
the glass panels are mounted on adjustable metal fittings, allowing the angle of display to be subtly adapted to the interior setting. Used individually as sculptural accent pieces or as a pair for greater presence, these lamps exemplify the refined, tactile aesthetic of 1970s scandinavian design.
