Between 1926 and 1928, Eileen Gray collaborated with Jean Badovici on the creation of Villa E-1027 in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. Among the pieces she designed for the house, the Satellite Mirror was created in 1927.
It is composed of a structure of nickel-plated brass holding the main mirror. The mirror features an internal light made of sanded convex glass cover for 2 x 15 W light bulbs, and and a circular 8-inch pivoting magnifying mirror maintained and positioned by two blocking clamp levers.
In 1978, interior designer Andrée Putman launched Ecart, a Parisian firm that reissued forgotten designers from the 1930s including: René Herbst, Jean-Michel Frank, Pierre Chareau, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Gaudi and Eileen Gray. Ecart is still in operation today.
Whereas art deco ushered the age of modernism, Eileen Gray was a pioneer in applying the latter to furniture design as embodied in this mirror. Even contemporary design cannot compete with such an extraordinary avant-garde design.
This vintage mirror is a 1980s edition and in very good condition. It attaches to the wall by a square and its 2 screws (provided) on which the mirror rests.
