This beautiful and elegant humidor is quite a rare find! I have not been able to find another one like it in any color. We recently found this at an estate not far from the factory in Ohio.
This is a three piece cylindrical Cambridge glass tobacco humidor, finely detailed with an etching depicting an equestrian hunt scene all around the sides. The lid features a medallion etching on the top with the a gold encrusted version of the same etching on the inside of the top. The interior features an inner lid with humidifier.
The highly reflective black glass is accented with gold around the top rim, encrusted over the hunt scene etching on the side and on the medallion inside the lid. The bottom is not marked with the Cambridge C in a triangle. Please note that the only colors present in the glass of this humidor are black and gold. Because it has a shiny mirror finish, you will see reflections of other colors in the black areas of the pictures.
Thanks to the information published online by the The National Cambridge Collectors organization, I have been able to learn a little of the history of these items.
Imperial Hunt Scene, Etch No. 718, Ebony, Tobacco Humidor, was made by Cambridge Glass Co. 1928-35. Humidors, like all tobacco products, were immensely popular from the early 1900s through the middle of the century. During that period, humidors reflected the owners epitome of style and elegance. Today, humidors remain highly collectible.
The gold encrusted etched pattern on this Elegant glass humidor is known as Imperial Hunt Scene Etch #718. It first appeared in a Cambridge catalog page that is thought to be from 1927, but it wasn't until the next catalog in 1928 where the etching is shown on an Ebony No. 1025 cigar humidor, gold encrusted. Glass experts agree that Hunt Scene's heyday appears to have been in the period 1927-1929 and was out of the Cambridge line by the late 1930s. The ebony color pieces in this line were not as prominent at the time so are more rare today.
A similar Cambridge humidor is documented as selling for $75 when new in 1929. Put that in the inflation calculator and that's worth about $1,200 today!

There are no cracks, chips or repairs. There is no gilding on the outside of the top, only the etching, though it may have always been that way. Some of the gilding is missing on the ring around the lid. The gilding on the humidor base is worn where the lid sits on it. Some of the gold plating on the hunt scene etching is not as bright as the rest. There are very light surface scratches along the outside edge of the bottom of the humidor where its sits on a surface. less
