Dan Solojoff, Russian (1908 - 1994)
Daniil Andreyevich Solojef born in St. Petersburg on February 27 (February 14) 1908 and died on 21 in Paris 1, is a poet, painter and illustrator Russian akin to Surrealist school and neo-primitivist.
He left Russia in 1920 and initially stayed in Bessarabia.
In 1944, he was deported with his wife in a labor camp in Germany. From 1945 to 1960, he moved to Lyon. Then, from 1960, he lives in Paris.
He died October 21, 1994 in Paris. He is buried at the Russian cemetery of Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois (Essonne).
Eclectic artist his paintings (oil or gouache), have characteristics close to surrealism and th neo-primitivism dear to Marc Chagall whom he met in Cannes in the 1960s.
Jean-Pierre Delarge calls it elliptical draftsman and watercolorist symbolist sometimes Francis Picabia resumes the system of transparency.
Jerzy Waldemar Jarocinski, said Waldemar George, from 1957 he begins, in parallel, a career as an illustrator resulting in numerous works including those of Baudelaire editions, Verlaine, The Bible, etc. He edited himself, some of his books.
His poetry is singular. Antonia Bernard, in the Journal of Slavic studies, described as;the verse is free without being released, original research without extravagance. In 1945, with the assistance of her aunt, who lived in France, he settled in Lyon. He painted landscapes, portraits, circus scenes, paintings on religious subjects; He worked in oil, watercolor and gouache. Illustrated edition bibliophilic "Epistles of St. Paul" (1955), "Taras Bulba" N. V. Gogolya (1957), "Wisdom" P. Verlaine (1966), "Spleen and Ideal" (1959) and "The Flowers of Evil" ( 1966) C. Baudelaire. Many illustrations have remained unpublished. From 1960 he lived in Paris.
Exhibited in the Salon of Lyon Fine Arts Society, he received a bronze, silver, and the first gold (1958) medals. Several works acquired Lyon Museum (1960). He held a solo exhibition in Lyon (1949, 1952, 1954, 1958), Paris (Gallery K. Granoff; 1956-1968, almost every year), Le Havre (1957), Montpellier (Hérault Dept., 1958, 1976.), Rotterdam (1958) , Cannes (1961), Zurich (1968), New York (1968, 1973), Los Angeles (1970), Palm Beach, United States (1969, 1970) and in Germany - Karlsruhe (1970), Bad Taynahe (1972) and Pforzheim (1974). In 1972, work has been shown at the exhibition; Significant paintings of Russian artists in French Collections; in the Salon d'Automne at the Grand Palais.
