This finely detailed Japanese Satsuma plate dates to the late Meiji period and is richly decorated with a continuous figural scene rendered in raised enamel and generous hand-applied gilt. The composition unfolds across the surface like a quiet narrative—robed figures gathered in a ceremonial courtyard, attendants in motion, and architectural elements layered in perspective to create depth and rhythm.
The softly crackled ivory glaze provides a luminous ground for the decoration, allowing the gold to catch and reflect the light beautifully without overwhelming the scene. The scalloped rim is elaborately worked with dense gilded scrollwork and floral motifs, framing the interior like a decorative border on a painted manuscript.
Bearing a Haruyama workshop mark to the underside, consistent with late Meiji–Taishō Japanese export porcelain.
春山製
(Haruyama sei)
春 (Haru) = Spring
山 (Yama) = Mountain
製 (Sei) = Made / Manufactured
“Made by Haruyama” or “Haruyama workshop.”
This is a refined example of Meiji-era Satsuma ware, created during a period when Japanese ceramics were celebrated internationally for their technical sophistication and storytelling detail. While richly ornamented, the palette remains balanced and elegant, making the piece highly versatile—equally compelling in a curated cabinet, on open shelving, or styled alongside mid-century and eclectic interiors.
