* These sumptuous original 18th-century mezzotint engravings with watercolour by Richard Earlom (1743-1822) are from the works by Dutch luminary artist Jan Van Huysum (1682-1749).
In the late 18th century, Richard Earlom was commissioned as part of a printmaking project to reproduce Sir Robert Walpole’s extensive painting collection at The Houghton Gallery. The project was initiated when it became evident that the collection would need to be sold - eventually to Catherine of Russia in 1778.
Earlom was particularly admired for his work involving florals and fruits and these two pieces are an excellent example of his talent. *Identical uncoloured flower pieces have sold through Christie''s for up to £2,750. The colouring is accomplished and dynamic.
