It stands for "old" and was struck on silver and gold objects before the introduction of the new tax legislation that year. It is a hallmark for antique silver (before 1807). Used briefly from 1807, during the reign of louis napoleon. Often found on 18th-century dutch silver objects. The crowned o appears in various variations and is sometimes struck multiple times. It is often found in combination with city hallmarks and maker's marks, or later tax stamps. This hallmark confirms the authenticity of old dutch silver.
