Catilina chair with painted steel frame, black lacquered plywood seat, and polyurethane cushion covered in green fabric. This iconic chair was designed by Luigi Caccia Dominioni in 1958 and produced by Azucena in the 1970s. Luigi Caccia Dominioni first presented this chair at the 11th Milan Triennale in 1957, and from that moment on, Catilina became one of Luigi Caccia Dominioni's classics.
Caccia Dominioni created a new chair and also defined the way of sitting. Catilina was not designed for relaxing and letting go, but for being attentive and elegant. You could almost be transported to ancient Rome, sitting in the armchair of the Roman senator Lucio Sergio Catilina, from whom it takes its name. In turn, the chair is reminiscent of medieval thrones or the horseshoe-shaped armchairs typical of classic Chinese furniture. Catilina is essentially a stroke of the pen, a play of curves, an object that—as Caccia Dominioni himself liked to say—is “ethereal, no more than a series of curved iron bars.” Whatever interpretation you give it, Catilina embodies a product designed for comfort, thanks to its well-padded cushion, and dignity. When you rest your arms on the upper edge, you can't help but feel regal, in contrast to the sense of abandonment you feel when you sink into a sofa.
