A tubular chair designed in the 1980s by Ladislav Vrátník for the legendary Mánes exhibition hall on the banks of the Vltava River in Prague. The functionalist building was constructed in 1930 on the site of the former Šítkovské mills according to a design by Otakar Novotný and served for many years as the headquarters of the Mánes Association of Fine Artists. To this day, it is considered an architectural gem and a symbol of a prestigious exhibition space.
Ladislav Vrátník was a Czech academic architect who devoted himself to interior and furniture design, as well as industrial design. He is the author of the furniture for the Spanish Hall and the interiors of the south wing of Prague Castle, Omnipol Prague, and the prelature in Zbraslav. He also made a significant mark on the history of design as a teacher at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, where he taught interior and furniture design and was appointed professor in 1990. In 1984, he received a gold medal for the Adam and Eve furniture system for the Mánes building.
The chair has a bent chrome-plated steel tube frame, a crescent-shaped seat and backrest with a plywood base and new black leather upholstery. The elegant frame is supported by a thin vertical tube at the back.
The chair is in very good condition after partial renovation. The chrome plating is slightly scratched in places, as can be seen in the photos. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
