Offered is a piece of true cinematic history: a rustic hardwood coffee table from the Encino ranch home of Hollywood’s most iconic couple, Clark Gable and Carole Lombard.
Acquired from the prestigious Christie’s Auction 1681 (The Estate of Clark Gable), this table served as a centerpiece in the couple's beloved "Hilltop House" between 1939 and 1942. The table was famously captured in a 1940 feature of Architectural Digest, showcasing the couple’s "Early American" decor—a style Lombard curated to give Gable a rugged, comfortable sanctuary away from the studio lights.
Constructed of solid wood with a thick plank top and lower shelf, the table reflects the understated, lodge-style aesthetic of the Gable–Lombard residence. The turned legs and stretcher base provide classic early American character.
Condition & Provenance:
The table remains in "as-found" condition from the Gable estate. Notably, it bears the original wear, stains and "teething marks" from the couple's beloved dogs, adding an irreplaceable personal connection to their daily life. After Lombard’s tragic passing in 1942, the contents of the home were placed into storage when Gable remarried and redecorated. This table remained preserved until its eventual sale at Christie’s in 2006. I personally purchased it 18 years ago at the auction in NYC.
*Included is the original black & white photo taken by Architectural Digest.
