With an open shelf above and a closed compartment below, this early 20th century Chinese book cabinet is the perfect mix of storage and display. The small cabinet has a simple silhouette, constructed with clean lines and a bold finish of red and black lacquer. Years of use have imparted an antique patina, now lightly worn with soft texture and fading along the edges. The unfinished back tells a story of its own - a collage of hand-painted Chinese characters, seams patched with old newspaper, and loving repairs of inlaid butterfly joints. Today, we love the short cabinet as a bookcase, console table or unexpected bar chest.
