The Artistry
An exceptional hand-pulled woodblock reproduction of Utagawa Hiroshige’s "Tone River, Scattering Star-vessels," Plate No. 64 from the One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (1857). This print is a masterclass in Japanese perspective, using the gnarled, massive trunk of an ancient pine to frame the sweeping landscape of the Tone River. The "star-vessels" mentioned in the title refer to the small fishing boats that appear like scattered stars against the deep blue of the water, a classic Hiroshige metaphor for the harmony between man and nature.
