The Artistry
An exceptional hand-pulled woodblock reproduction of Utagawa Hiroshige’s "Night View of Matsuchiyama and the San'ya Canal," originally published in 1857 as part of the One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. This is one of the few prints in the series to feature a full portrait of a person—a geisha returning from a banquet at one of the famous restaurants near the Imado Bridge. The shimmering lights of the Matsuchiyama Shōden temple and the glitter of stars reflecting in the water make this one of Hiroshige's most evocative nighttime scenes.
Technical Details
Medium: Authentic hand-pulled woodblock print.
Paper: Traditional Handmade Japanese Washi. This artisanal paper is crucial for achieving the deep, saturated blacks and navy blues of the night sky, and it provides the characteristic ink "bleed-through" on the reverse.
Artist: After Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858).
Visuals: Features masterful "Bokashi" (color gradation) to create the fading light on the horizon and the soft glow of the lanterns.
