Marianne is the national allegorical representation of the French Republic. Depicted as a young woman wearing a Phrygian cap (a red conical hat with the tip folded forward), Marianne personifies the French Republic and represents the permanence of the Republic's values: Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. The first depiction of a woman wearing a Phrygian cap, an allegory of Liberty and the Republic, appears during the French Revolution. The origin of the name Marianne is not known with certainty, although it was very common in the 18th century. It represents the population freeing itself from the monarchy and the nascent Republic.
