Expressive carved wooden bear head made as a wall piece. The fur is worked with short, rhythmic gouge marks, with a beautiful transition from deep dark tones to warm brown across the head.
Dimensions: height 32 cm, width 30 cm, depth 15 cm.
Thanks to its strong sense of depth and the visible tool marks, the piece has an almost relief-like, mask quality: clean and graphic from the front, powerful and sculptural in profile. A hanging hole is provided on the back, so it can be mounted securely straight away.
This bear head is traditional Ainu art from Hokkaido. The Ainu are the Indigenous people of northern Japan, known for their rich visual language in wood and textiles. The bear holds a significant role as a symbol of strength and spiritual protection.
In good condition, with light wear and age-related traces consistent with the 1960s.
