Gaming Table, Wood, Directoire, circa 1800 – France
An elegant and timeless crescent-shaped wooden gaming table from the Directoire period, late 18th century. It rests on pilastered legs topped with wooden pads. It features a refined, classic tabletop with a green felt pad.
Its curved profile, faceted legs, and discreet drawer reflect the neoclassical aesthetic characteristic of late 18th and early 19th-century design. Its balanced proportions and understated details make it an ideal choice as a desk, console, side table, or gaming table, in both classic and contemporary interiors. It features minimal ornamentation, as the beauty of the piece lies in the wood itself, with its warm tones and pronounced grain.
The felt surface provides a practical and luxurious work area, while the drawer offers subtle storage without disrupting the clean lines. When fully extended, the table reaches a diameter of 110 centimeters. It can also be placed with the top half open and leaning against the wall, as shown in the photo, creating a highly decorative and sophisticated look.
The Directoire style is a furniture and decoration style that developed in France during the Directoire period (1795-1799) and marks the transition between the Louis XVI and Empire styles. It is a Neoclassical-inspired style characterized by the simplicity of its lines, inspired by Roman artifacts from the 1st century AD, unearthed at Pompeii and Herculaneum. This revival of classical taste was evident in painting, furniture, and fashion, especially in women's clothing.
During this era, France was experiencing significant political and social changes, which were reflected in furniture with a more rational and functional approach. Symmetrical drawer design and the balanced proportions of the furniture as a whole are key characteristics of classic furniture from this period. Unlike earlier styles, such as Rococo, Directoire is characterized by more restrained decoration. The drawer pulls and legs feature simple geometric details and classical motifs.
