Impressive pair of small gilt bronze masks depicting a pair of satyrs or the Greek god Bacchus, dating from the Louis XVI period, towards the end of the 18th century.
In Greco-Roman mythology, a satyr was a rural deity or nature spirit, represented as a hybrid being with a human torso and the legs, tail, and horns of a goat. Associated with the god Dionysus or Bacchus, they symbolized lust, wine, music, and basic animal instincts, and were known for pursuing nymphs. They were festive, joyful, and drunken beings who formed part of Dionysus's retinue. They were seen as wild and dangerous creatures that frightened women and animals.
In this case, the entire mask is adorned with vine leaves and bunches of grapes, exhibiting great creative quality with a chiseled gold finish that suggests it is a high-quality ornamental piece. Its style is classic, reflecting European mythological iconography. Inside, it has a large anchor point for screwing or mounting on a surface or piece of furniture.
Originally, it is very likely that they were ornamental elements of some important piece of furniture or architectural support. These types of objects were decorative elements often used on high-quality and valuable furniture or walls, enriching the decorative environment and adding elegance, sophistication, and aesthetic value.
They could be displayed as beautiful sculptures for purely ornamental purposes if placed on a suitable base or stand.
