An exceptional oil on canvas by the Spanish artist Juan Valenzuela y Chacón, depicting an original and expressive still life. The background is neutral, a dark ochre color, and the various elements are arranged on a white tablecloth.
with loose, impasto brushstrokes, the artist creates a truly dreamlike and symbolic atmosphere, as if the work were emerging from our memories. A background playing with a wide range of ochre tones gives way, in the center of the work, to an expressionist-style composition that plays with glass jars and bottles, which blend with blue tones that seem to have a life of their own. The volume of the composition is enhanced by adding a more intense varnish, applied in layers that merge perfectly with the still life, becoming integrated into it.
Light, very important in Valenzuela y Chacón's work, is crucial in the creation of space/time; there is always a luminous source that generates hope and an open mind to interpretation.
Juan Valenzuela y Chacón (Madrid, 1932-)
Juan Valenzuela y Chacón was a Spanish painter born in 1932 in Madrid. He studied at the School of Fine Arts, which shaped his basic training in the visual arts. He also studied at the Faculty of Medicine, where he earned his doctorate and went on to hold the Chair of Histology, an unusual combination that suggests an intellectual personality with interests beyond art. He later worked at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and earned a degree in Philosophy and Letters, further solidifying his profile as an artist with a broad humanistic foundation.
His work is particularly influenced by numerous trips throughout Europe, Africa, and the Americas, experiences that enriched his aesthetic vision. An extraordinary artist, he uses a powerful command of color and a broad pictorial concept, imbuing his landscapes and still lifes with a robust and precise technique and a highly personal light, a defining characteristic of his style. He discovers a beautiful and complex harmony within them. His pictorial discourse seeks to evoke powerful emotion in his works. He tirelessly pursues the imprint of a personal style that distinguishes him from other contemporary painters, a style that is both strong and delicate, allowing him to express the full spectrum of his emotions.
In January 1957, he won the third medal in the engraving and drawing section of the 28th Autumn Salon, one of the most important Spanish art competitions of his time. This piece has an attribution mark,
