This expressive wall piece depicts an Ainu bear holding a salmon.
The fur is built up with short, rhythmic gouge marks, while the salmon is carved in contrast with scales and fins. Warm brown tones and subtle shading give the whole piece a lively, almost graphic presence.
Dimensions: height 47 cm, width 50 cm, depth 22 cm.
A hanging hole is provided on the back, so it can be mounted securely on the wall right away. A strong statement piece for a wabi-sabi interior, or a striking accent in a more minimal setting.
The reverse bears a carved inscription indicating origin/reference: Shiraoi Kotan (Hokkaido) and 1974 (date).
Condition: good vintage condition with normal age- and wear-related marks; the tail fin has an old repair, not visible once the piece is hung.
