Very rare and highly sculptural light sculpture lamp by raak, offered in very good vintage condition.
the design consists of four anodized aluminum tubes, each with a different shape and cut.
the tubes are interchangeable and can be rearranged in endless combinations, allowing the lamp to function as a continually changing sculptural composition.
each tube holds one bulb (e27 fitting), for a total of four light sources (max. 4 × 60 watts, suitable for 110/220 volt).
the electricity has been fully checked and the lamp works properly.
there are light signs of wear and minor surface damages consistent with age and use (see photos).
this lamp was never intended primarily as a functional light source, but as an illuminated object within the interior.
when switched on, it emits a warm, diffuse glow that accentuates form, volume, and rhythm rather than direct illumination.
even when unlit, the object reads as a strong modernist sculpture—architectural, balanced, and visually powerful.
the spiritual father of this design is architect maurice grothusen, whose multidisciplinary vision is clearly present: the precision of the architect, the curiosity of the sculptor, and the eye of a graphic artist converge in a single object.
raak amsterdam was founded in 1954 by c.o. Lockhorn, a former employee of philips lighting eindhoven.
the name “raak,” meaning “to hit” in dutch, refers to design that precisely hits the nail on the head. Raak became internationally renowned for its organic modern lighting designs of the 1970s, combining industrial materials with minimalist forms to create a refined and forward-looking aesthetic.
