An exceptional and refined example of early French Art Deco silverwork, this distinguished five-piece dresser set was crafted in Paris by Jules Matfeau in .950 first standard silver, a higher purity than sterling and reserved for fine French luxury wares. Elegant, architectural, and impeccably constructed, the set reflects the restrained sophistication that defined Parisian design in the early decades of the 20th century. The set includes:
(2) Jars with fully removable screw off lids, each measuring approximately 2 inches high by 2.25 inches wide/deep. Each weighs approximately 122 grams.
(2) Scent Bottles, marked “I” and “II,” measuring approximately 3.75 inches high, 1.75 inches wide and 1.25 inches deep. These are crafted entirely in solid .950 silver with no interior liners. There is an interior screw off cap on each. Each weighs approximately 102 grams.
(1) Elongated hand-cut and etched crystal bottle measuring approximately 6.75 inches high, 1.5 inches wide/deep, crowned with a finely fitted silver cap. The precision of the glass cutting and the crispness of the etching elevate the piece from utilitarian to sculptural, beautifully balancing the strong linear qualities of the silver forms. The silver lid weighs 19 grams.
Overall good antique condition, there is surface wear and few small indents to the silver. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
All exterior caps are monogrammed “WKF,”. The total silver weight of 467 grams confirms the substantial nature of the pieces; these are not lightweight decorative items but serious, well-made objects of enduring value.
The aesthetic is quintessential early Art Deco: clean geometry, vertical ribbing, understated ornament, and a disciplined elegance that allows proportion and craftsmanship to take center stage. At once functional and architectural, this set would have graced the dressing table of a refined Parisian interior — equally at home today in a curated modern space where fine materials and timeless design are appreciated.
A rare and cohesive French .950 silver vanity service of exceptional quality, embodying both luxury and restraint in perfect balance.
