Intimate devotional painting depicting Christ as the Man of Sorrows (Ecce Homo variant) in half-length. The figure is shown after the Flagellation and Crowning with Thorns: head encircled by a thorny crown from which blood drips down the forehead, cheeks, neck and bare chest. The face conveys deep suffering and quiet resignation, with half-closed eyes, a single tear visible on the left cheek, and slightly parted lips. A heavy black chain composed of rounded links is draped around the neck and upper torso – an uncommon and symbolically strong motif emphasizing bondage and humiliation. In the right hand Christ holds a reed (symbol of mockery), while a blue-green cloak drapes over the left shoulder. The background is dark and nearly uniform, concentrating all attention on the figure and intensifying the meditative character of the work.
The execution is characteristic of late-Gothic / early-Renaissance painting in the Alpine region: expressive yet somewhat rough brushwork, thick impasto in the blood passages, coarse skin texture created with dry brush and stippling for wounds, bold black outlines for the chains, and broad, blended strokes for the drapery and dark ground. The surface has a matte appearance with visible coarse canvas weave in thinner areas – typical of smaller devotional works produced in workshops north and south of the Alps around 1500.
**Provenance**
Reportedly from a private collection in South Tyrol (Alto Adige), Bruneck , Italy.
The reverse of the canvas bears an old inventory mark.
