19th Century French Empire Giltwood & Gesso Mantel Mirror — 22" x 34"
A storied piece of mid-to-late 19th-century European design, this French Empire-style mantel mirror features a classic rectangular form accented by refined neoclassical motifs. The frame is constructed with a solid, hand-planed wood core and elaborate molded gesso (plaster) detailing, including fluted side pilasters and a foliate-carved crest. The original gilding has mellowed over 150 years into a rich, complex bronze-gold patina, revealing hints of the traditional reddish-brown clay bole beneath. The reverse retains its original period wood backing panels and workshop-stamped hardware (numbered "356"), confirming its authentic antique origin. A soulful architectural element, this mirror brings an undeniable sense of history and "wabi-sabi" elegance to any curated interior.
Dimensions:
Frame: 34" W x 22" H x 3" D
Mirror: 28" W x 18" H
Condition:
Fair/Distressed Antique Condition. This piece exhibits heavy, authentic wear consistent with its significant history. There are notable losses and cracking throughout the gesso ornamentation, particularly at the corners and crest, where the underlying wood is exposed. The original silvered glass shows beautiful, smoky foxing and areas of desilvering (backing loss). The frame is structurally sound, though the gesso is brittle and prone to minor flaking.
Offering a timeless "French Country" or "Shabby Chic" aesthetic, this authenticated 19th-century mirror is a poetic addition to a fireplace mantel, grand entry, or gallery wall.
