1973 Steve Le Bailly Original Portrait Watercolor - "Study of a Head"
A rare and deeply personal early work by the late Seattle artist Steve Le Bailly (1943–2024). Titled "Study of a Head," this 1973 original watercolor was painted during the artist's time in Lyon, France. The piece features a delicate, fine-line portrait of a young woman with a braided hairstyle, showcasing Le Bailly’s early mastery of the medium. The reverse includes a poignant hand-written dedication from the artist to his mother, alongside his original studio label.
Dimensions:
Art: 10" W x 14" H
Framed: 14" W x 17.75" H
Condition:
The artwork is in Very Good to Excellent Vintage Condition. The watercolor paper is exceptionally well-preserved, remaining bright with no visible foxing or significant toning. The original 1970s gold-toned wood frame and brown velvet-style matting show light, age-appropriate surface wear, including minor scuffs and nicks. The backing paper exhibits natural tanning and a small puncture/tear on the left side, consistent with its 50-year history.
Provenance:
Fully documented on the reverse with the artist’s original 1970s Seattle studio label. Hand-signed, titled, and dated "1973 Lyon France" by the artist, including a personal dedication: "To Mom."
A standout piece of Pacific Northwest art history, this "Study of a Head" offers a rare glimpse into Le Bailly's early European period. Its superior condition and intimate provenance make it a premier choice for any serious collector or refined interior.
