1980 Steve Le Bailly Original Graphite Illustration of Union Pacific #490
A finely detailed technical graphite drawing by Northwest artist Steve Le Bailly, dated 1980. This piece depicts a Union Pacific Consolidation-type (2-8-0) steam locomotive, engine #490. Rendered on professional-grade Crescent No. 200 Hot Press Illustration Board, the work showcases masterful industrial draftsmanship with intricate cross-hatching and tonal shading. The artist’s signature and the 1980 date are clearly inscribed in the lower-left corner.
Dimensions: 20" W x 13.5" H
Condition:
The drawing is in Fair to Poor vintage condition. Significant condition notes include:
Corner & Edge Wear: Extensive fraying, creasing, and paper loss at all four corners, particularly the upper-left.
Foxing: Noticeable reddish-brown age spots (foxing) scattered across the background and margins.
Toning: The board exhibits natural yellowish-tan oxidation consistent with its 40+ year age.
Surface: Minor smudging and light surface scuffs are present in the negative space. The central locomotive illustration remains crisp and sharp.
Provenance:
Hand-signed and dated "1980" by Steve Le Bailly. The reverse features the original manufacturer's stamp for Crescent Illustration Board No. 200.
Despite its peripheral wear, this is a remarkable piece of railroadiana and a testament to Le Bailly’s skill. It is an ideal candidate for professional "window matting," which would conceal the damaged edges and highlight the powerful central imagery.
