Vintage Copper & Brass Egg Coddler by Tagus, Portugal | Complete | c. 1960s

There are kitchen objects that work, and there are kitchen objects that delight. This one does both — and looks extraordinary doing it.
This complete copper and brass egg coddler by Tagus of Portugal is one of those rare vintage finds that arrives exactly as it should: all original components intact, copper bright and clean, ready for the breakfast table it was made for. The body is egg-shaped — deliberately, charmingly so — polished to a warm mirror finish and cradled in scrolled brass legs. A cast brass hen sits atop the domed lid, presiding over the whole affair with appropriate authority.
Egg coddling is a gentler, slower method than boiling — eggs steamed in a water bath, with butter and herbs added before the lid goes on, producing whites of extraordinary tenderness and yolks that hold just so. This coddler handles three eggs at once. Copper's exceptional heat conductivity makes it ideal for exactly this kind of delicate work.
Found at a Nantucket estate sale, complete with its original brass burner, interior egg holder, and domed lid. The interior is remarkably clean. The exterior shows the warm, natural patina of a well-kept piece.
A working antique that earns its place on the counter every morning.
