The figure displays the abhaya mudra (the gesture of fearlessness) with the right hand raised and holds an attribute in the left hand. It features an elaborate tall crown with carved details, serene downcast eyes, flowing robes with draped scarves, and sits on a lotus throne base mounted on a black stand. The weathered surface shows traces of gilt and original pigment, with significant aged patina suggest Ming or Qing dynasty origin. The monumental scale and refined carving indicate this was likely a temple sculpture. No maker’s mark.

This piece was sourced from the estate of Stanley Reifer, a voracious collector of Chinese art, whose five-acre family holiday Bridgehampton home is reputed to have evoked the beauty of Beijing’s summer palace gardens.
