An exquisite example of 19th-century French Animalier art, this bronze sculpture entitled "Bitch with Pups" (Saintongeois Pointers) was modeled by the master Pierre-Jules Mêne.
This tender composition depicts a mother pointer standing guard over her nursing litter, a subject for which Mêne was celebrated during his prolific career in Paris.
The bronze features a rich, dark patina and exceptional anatomical precision. It bears the artist's incised signature "P.J. MÊNE" on the naturalistic base and is elegantly presented on a heavy, beveled black marble plinth.
The entire piece is 8" tall x 14 1/2" long x 8 1/2 " wide.
It is in excellent, ready-to-display condition.
