Postmodernism in furniture design emerged in the late 1970s as a reaction against the perceived austerity and rigidity of Modernism. It embraced eclecticism, historical references, and playful forms, often incorporating bold colors and unconventional materials. Postmodern chairs frequently feature exaggerated shapes, asymmetry, and a departure from purely functional aesthetics to make a statement.
Attributed to Ray Wilkes, an American designer, created iconic pieces that embody the Postmodern spirit. His work, particularly the Wilkes Modular Sofa Group designed in 1976, is celebrated for its innovative use of materials and its blend of comfort with a striking visual presence. These designs often feature rounded forms and a sense of enveloping comfort, making them both functional and sculptural.
Chairs are missing their original tags , previous owner reupholstered them and was not careful saving the tags. Sold individually. Four (4) chairs are currently available.
