Authentic 19th Century Japanese Giltwood Amida Nyorai Buddha. This exceptional antique statue depicts Amida Nyorai (Amitābha), the Buddha of Infinite Light, in a serene meditative state. Hand-carved during the late Edo to early Meiji period, it features the traditional Yosegi-zukuri (joined-block) technique.
Details:
• Material: Giltwood—aged wood finished with dark Urushi lacquer and original gold leaf.
• Construction: Multi-piece joined wood; hollow and lightweight at approx. 10 oz.
• Base: Intricate multi-tiered hexagonal lotus throne with traditional cloud motifs.
• Condition: Features beautiful "honest wear" consistent with 150+ years of age. There is a small, stable chip on the front drapery (see photos) which reveals the natural wood grain beneath. The original gold leaf has softened over time, revealing the dark lacquer base—a patina highly sought after by collectors.
A serene liturgical piece perfect for collectors of Japanese art or Buddhist iconography.`

The giltwood surface exhibits a wonderful 'wabi-sabi' patina, with areas of the gold leaf naturally thinned or rubbed to reveal the dark lacquer undercoat beneath. There are minor historical losses to the wood and small chips to the gilt, particularly along the edges of the base and robes, as is typical for a devotional piece from the Edo period. Structurally sound with no modern repairs detected." less
