Published in Paris between 1845 and 1852 by Arthus Bertrand, Libraire de la Société de Géographie, this plate forms part of one of the most significant nineteenth-century illustrated voyage publications documenting global exploration. The composition presents a picturesque landscape near Singapore, combining topographical observation with romantic landscape aesthetics typical of mid-nineteenth-century French expedition imagery. A carriage drawn by horses travels along a winding road framed by tall tropical trees, opening toward distant views of coastal plains and settlements. The scene captures both the natural environment and the early colonial atmosphere of Singapore during a period of rapid transformation following its establishment as a major trading port. The La Bonite expedition had multiple objectives: diplomatic engagement, expansion of French commercial interests, hydrographic observation, and scientific documentation. Artists accompanying the voyage, including Barthélémy Lauvergne, produced detailed visual records later translated into finely printed lithographs. These images are valued today not only for their artistic qualities but also for their documentary importance, offering rare early European perspectives on Southeast Asian landscapes. The delicate hand-colouring enhances atmospheric depth and botanical detail, making this print both historically significant and visually appealing. Early Singapore views remain highly sought after by collectors of Asian topography, colonial travel imagery, and exploration art, as well as by interior designers seeking refined nineteenth-century decorative prints with geographic narrative.
