(Lawrence Ferlinghetti) signed "SMIRA" in pencil l.r. and numbered "86/100" in pencil l.l., Color lithograph on Arches paper with watermarks, deckled edges. Shaoul Smira is an American artist. Shaoul smira moved to Israel from Iraq as a child in 1951, found his métier in art and received his training in Tel Aviv, Israel at the Avni Art Institute. Lauded as the Marc Chagall of israel. In 1965 he moved to Paris and continued his studies in the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. These endeavors progressed in 1971 when Smira attended the Antwerp Academy to study etching and in 1976 when he attended workshops in Belgium to study the process of cast paper work. Smira also attended workshops in 1985 at the Atelier Mourlot for series of lithos. His work is influenced by the Italian Transavanguardia movement, artists such as Francesco Clemente, Sandro Chia, Mimmo Paladino, and other Neo-expressionism artists such as Kitaj, Elvira Bach, Eric Fischl, Leon Golub and David Salle. Shaoul Smira has an impressive biography and has been lauded and written about by many prominent art critics and museum directors, including Gerard Goodrow from the Ludwig Museum in Koln, Jan Fonce from the Mucka Museum in Belgium, Yigal Zalmona The Chief Curator of the Israel Museum, Amnon Barzel, Director of the Prato Museum, Italy, as well as art critics Franz Bonders from Palle De Beaux-Arts, Belgium and Donald Kuspit, a Professor of Art and Philosophy from New York. Smira has been living and working in New York since 1978.
