Dan C. Rizzie, American artist and musician, was born in Poughkeepsie, NY on May 23, 1951 and grew up in India, Egypt, Jordan and Jamaica. Rizzie lives in Sag Harbor, New York. Dan Rizzie is a contemporary artist. A painter, printmaker, lithograph, monotype woodblock, chine colle, and collage artist. He attended Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas under the mentorship of Don Marr and Bill Hawes. At Hendrix he received his BFA in 1973. In 2005, Rizzie was awarded Hendrix College's Distinguished Alumnus Award. Rizzie earned a MFA from Southern Methodist University's Meadow's School of Art in Dallas, Texas in 1975. Rizzie's works may contain layers of materials and symbolism from his varied cultural experiences. One of the major collage artists of the 20th century. His works may contain layers of newspaper, paint, wax, or dirt, and he often incorporates filigree, historic decorative patterns, and bold botanic imagery: a signature motif is graphic silhouettes of birds or flowers cast in front of decorative, abstract patterns. His iconography includes found objects, old wallpaper patterns, and common vines and plants as well as varied flora and fauna. Rizzie's fundamental influences are Piet Mondrian, Kurt Schwitters and Kazimir Malevich and this is apparent in his work. The contemporary artists Jasper Johns, Cy Twombley and Brice Marden are also very important inspirations, as are less expected ones such as Paul Klee, Robert Delaunay, Gerald Murphy and the marginal Swedish artist Hilma Af Klint. Arguably even more significant is Rizzie's long-time fascination with Tantric imagery and Indian miniature painting. Rizzie has published with the Tamarind Institute, Albuquerque, New Mexico and the Tandem Press, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Wisconsin. Rizzie's art can be seen in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, the San Antonio Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and collections at AT&T Corporate Center, Chicago, Illinois, Delta Air Lines, Parrish Art Museum, and the Mayo Clinic.
