Frame dimensions 56 x 46 in. Rina Sutzkever Calderon, Born in Moscow, Russia in 1945, Her family immigrated to Israel in 1948. Her father, Abraham Sutzkever, was a well-known poet (he won the Israel prize in literature) and personal friend of famed Jewish artist Marc Chagall who illustrated a number of his works. Rina grew up with a love for art and culture in an artistic milieu surrounded by her fathers artists friends such as Marcel Janco, Yosl Bergner, Samuel Bak and Mordecai Ardon. Rina began her art studies with Nahum Gilboa and continued with Moshe Rosenthalis. While her earlier works are more realistic, Sutzkever's later works blend surrealism, fantasy, imagination and the lustre of reflection, resulting in dream like imagery. Her work bears the influence of the Vienna school of Fantastic Realism of Magic realism particularly Ernst Fuchs and Arik Brauer. On one of Marc Chagall's visits to Israel, the iconic judaica artist said to Rina, "... your father painted in words, and you write in colors..." She possesses an innate talent that enables her to express a rich spectrum of feelings. The women in her portraits are beautiful and romantic, and their delicate smile symbolizes an aspiration to the indefinable. Her flowers and trees are painted expressively in the style of Pissaro. This one bears the influence or Rene Magritte and Salvador Dali. Her work has been exhibited throughout Israel and internationally in New York, London, Brussels, and more. Her breakthrough show was at the Autumn Exhibition at Yad Labanim Museum, Petach Tikva in 1974 where she showed with artists Michael Argov, Naftali Bezem, Shraga Weil, Shmuel Katz, Zvi Mairovich, Ruth Schloss and others.
