Additionally, she has been a museum co-curator, lecturer and teacher of considerable international influence. Katherine grew up in Taiwan in a more or less traditional Chinese family. But in the postwar period of her youth, the tradition began to give way to "modernization," one consequence of which was to substitute the ballpoint pen for the ancient calligraphic brush, the primary instrument of poetic and aesthetic expression in Chinese culture. The noted curator J.S.M. Willette observed that Liu's painting collages "have a component beyond expressionist marking: they are resolutions of her Eastern heritage and Western training." The ancient Tibetan Lama Sumpo Khempo wrote that "since art embodies the mind, body and spirit, it must in truth be understood to be the highest form of learning." Katherine Chang Liu has learned well. Katherine Chang Liu is an artist, teacher, and art jurist known internationally. She conducts open studio workshops, providing individual guidance to students. Liu has exhibited in over 45 solo shows across the United States, Europe, and Asia, and her work appears in books and articles. Her mixed media pieces, like "Qualia," have been exhibited in shows curated by Peter Frank. She holds a science MS from UC Berkeley. Katherine received a full scholarship to UC Berkeley, where she received her MS in science. Her work has won 49 awards in the 80's before she became a frequently invited juror of regional and national art competitions. She was represented in international art fairs such as Art Paris, Art Copenhagen, the Chicago Navy Pier Show, the Los Angeles Art Show and Art Miami. Katherine has had 45 solo shows to date in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Fe, Denmark, Finland, France, Hong Kong, Italy, and Taiwan. She is a recipient of grants from the NEA and Virginia Commission of Arts and Humanities and her work can be found in over 1,100 public, private and corporate art collections. Katherine had been featured in 40 books and 98 magazine or newspaper articles. In 2012, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Watercolor USA Honor Society.
