Not dated estimated to the 1980's by the artist. Painted with metallic automotive paint. Suitable for outdoors or indoors. American Postwar & Contemporary artist who was born in 1933. Bruce White (b. 1933) is a large-scale sculptor who works primarily with permanent materials like stainless steel and aluminum. White creates his sculptures around surprise solutions based on manipulations in small scale. The solutions to these manipulations than can only be carried out in large-scale. White was born in New York and obtained a Bachelor's degree at the University of Maryland. He then went on to obtain both his Master's and Doctoral degrees at Columbia University in NYC. White has taught at various public schools and universities such as Northern Illinois University. Bruce White's work has been described as "an elegant union of ancient symbolism and contemporary science." His preferred materials are stainless steel and aluminum, although he has created works in bronze and granite--essentially materials which lend themselves to permanence. In addition to sculpture for residential and commercial interiors, he has done numerous large scale exterior public works. He has exhibited with Alexander Lieberman, John Henry, Fisher Stolz, Steve Tobin and Ray Katz. Bruce White has sculptures in both private and public collections, as well as large-scale public works all over the nation. He maintains a sculpting studio in Florida."Much of my sculpture has been influenced by images of the irregular and unpredictable patterns of nature—the orderly disorder of chaos theory. For example, the changing patterns of migrating birds in flight or of schools of fish, or the swirling mass of bats as they leave a cave at night and somehow manage to avoid colliding. Or the way that light that penetrates the foliage of trees and projects flickering changing patterns on the ground, and to falling leaves whose downward path is determined by the wind as well as by their contours. I have always been drawn to the manipulation of a plane in both organic and geometric configurations. I have tried to integrate my studies of chaos theory concepts and fractal formations with large folded and curved planes, piercing and patterning metal surfaces to capture and reflect both natural light as the sun moves and artificial light at night."
