MacConnel is a seminal figure in the Pattern and Decoration movement of the seventies, but overall MacConnel’s oeuvre has surpassed being categorized. MacConnel received his BA, with honors, from the University of California, San Diego in 1969 and his MFA, also with honors, in 1972, MacConnel's works often take the form of large, patterned wall-hangings in a palette of bright earth tones. His work is strongly inspired by folk art, both Western and non-Western, as seen in works such as Spare Time Shooting Practice (1978), a series of layered synthetic fabrics in polka dot, paisley, and floral prints, resembling a classic American quilt. MacConnel's work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Aspen Art Museum, the California Center for the Arts, the Santa Monica Museum of Art, and San Diego's Museum of Contemporary Art.
