His work was exhibited in a survey show, Gianfranco Gorgoni: Land Art Photographs, at the Nevada Museum of Art in 2012 Gorgoni was born in Rome to Italian actress Olga Gorgoni. He became an orphan at the age of 12. Then he grew up in Bomba, in the Abruzzo region of Italy. Gorgoni befriended gallery owner Leo Castelli and was introduced to and photographed the leading artists of his day including pop art master Andy Warhol, Bruce Nauman, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Keith Haring, just to name a few. He also photographed other artists such as Ellsworth Kelly, Donald Judd, John Chamberlain, Georgia O’Keeffe, Jasper Johns, Richard Serra and Joseph Beuys, not to mention authors like Truman Capote, Norman Mailer and Allen Ginsberg and many others. He shot in color cibachrome and chromogenic c print photos and in silver gelatin as well as digital. I have not seen any Polaroid photos by him. One of his real passions was land art, where he accompanied many artists like Christo and Jean-Claude, Robert Smithson, Michael Heizer and Walter De Maria. He was there to document the initial construction of their projects, works in progress and not just the final pieces. Many of which are lost to time and only remain immortalized through his beautiful work. For one book, he collaborated with Cuban leader Fidel Castro. He was best known for documenting the creation of outdoor installations of land art, such as his pictures of Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty, made in the Great Salt Lake in Utah in 1970. in the 1970s. He was hired by the Nevada Museum of Art as official photographer of Ugo Rondinone Seven Magic Mountains. Gorgoni's photographs of land art, installation art and other emergent forms were published in the 1972 book, The New Avant-Garde: Issues for the Art of the Seventies.
