These collages utilize disparate elements taken from magazines, catalogs, books, brochures, old billboard scrapings, and whatever other sources (even discarded paintings) and reconstitutes them into original works. William Zimmer, a contributing critic for The New York Times, said of his work, "Archer has a pile of advertising posters and other detritus in his backyard which he allows to grow moldy, and this becomes organic. When he uses material treated this way in a work it has a certain authority because it comes out of the earth. He likens his predilection for venerable-looking components to Leonardo's delight in 'little adventures,' such as stained walls. Like Da Vinci, Archer rejects little, for his working attitude means the eventual subordination of intellectual choices to the surprise of randomness." See less
