More About This Item
The Geneva table from Panache Designs — Michael Taylor's production furniture line — is one of those pieces that operates simultaneously as functional furniture and design statement. The pie-shaped segmented top is what distinguishes it: rather than a single plane of wood, the surface is composed of wedge-shaped segments radiating from the center, a construction technique that creates visual movement and celebrates the grain of the walnut in a way a plain top simply cannot. In the dark fruitwood finish — a deep, warm brown with the richness that walnut develops under careful finishing — every segment of that top catches light slightly differently.
The manufacturing model is embossed on the underside. With a 32-inch knee height, the Geneva works as a generous center table in a library or sitting room, or pulls double duty as a dining table for an intimate space. The circular or near-circular format allows seating all the way around — no head of the table, no hierarchy, just conversation.
This is the table you'd imagine in a San Francisco Pacific Heights dining room in the 1990s, when Michael Taylor's influence on California interior design was still at its peak. It would be equally at home in that same room today.
Design Style
Regency / California Traditional — Michael Taylor's own synthesis of European classical precedent and West Coast residential scale and openness. The Geneva's pie-shaped top is a Regency reference: segmented circular tops appeared in English furniture of the early 19th century as both practical (allowing for wider surfaces without wide planks) and decorative (celebrating the visual drama of matched veneer or inlay work). Taylor absorbed this tradition and gave it a California directness: less fussy than English high Regency, more confident in the material itself.
Brand Legacy
Michael Taylor (1927–1986) is among the most influential American interior designers of the 20th century, credited with creating the California Look — a grand-scale, naturalistic approach to interiors that combined antiques, oversized upholstery, natural materials, and light-filled openness that permanently changed how affluent Americans thought about their homes. His Panache Designs furniture line, produced through Michael Taylor Designs, extended his aesthetic vocabulary into production furniture sold through design showrooms. The manufacturing model is embossed on the underside of the table.
