Who is Erin Hanson?
Erin Hanson (b. 1981) is the creator of the painting style Open Impressionism, a vibrant and expressive painting technique that is being taught in hundreds of art schools. Her unique approach to oil painting has gained her millions of followers online and thousands of collectors worldwide. Erin's goal as an artist is to inspire a new renaissance of impressionism in the contemporary art world.
Erin began painting in oils when she was eight years old. As a teenager, she apprenticed at a mural studio where she helped to paint 40-foot-tall murals while selling art commissions on the side. As a young girl, she found inspiration in the works of van Gogh and Monet, marveling at the way they transformed everyday objects into luminous harmonies of color and light.
After being told enough times it was "too hard to make a living as an artist," Erin decided to attain her degree in Bioengineering from UC Berkeley. After college, Erin became a rock climber at Red Rock Canyon, Nevada. The colorful red rock landscapes she encountered during her excursions reignited her passion for painting, and she committed to creating one painting every week for the rest of her life—a promise she has kept, making her one of the most prolific artists in history. She has sold over 3,500 original oil paintings to enthusiastic collectors, leading to an ever-increasing demand for her originals. Erin also pioneered the application of 3D scanning and printing to the world of fine art reproductions and is the creator of the 3D Textured Replica, the most realistic textured art print on the market. These replicas have allowed her artwork to reach an even wider audience of devoted fans and collectors.
Erin Hanson's Open Impressionist paintings are immediately recognizable. Open Impressionism uses color to create emotion, thick oil paint strokes to create movement, and separated brushwork to create a stained glass effect. Open Impressionism is a blend of classical impressionism and modern expressionism, with a dash of plein air style. Unlike traditional oil painters, Hanson does not build up the painting layer by layer; instead, she lays her paint strokes side by side without overlapping and works to get each stroke “right the first time.” She uses a limited palette of only five pigments to create a vivid dance of unmuddied color upon the canvas, choosing colors that ignite the imagination and evoke the emotional feeling of being outdoors.
Through the years, Hanson has continued to use natural landscapes to inspire a vast collection of works. She visits the Colorado Plateau often, backpacking and hiking through Zion National Park, Canyon de Chelly, Monument Valley, and other national parks. Other favorite haunts include the Coachella Valley, the Northwestern mountains and coastlines, Carmel, Big Sur, Paso Robles, and Oregon wine country. Her recent travels have taken her to Japan, France, and Norway for more exotic scenery. During these photo safaris, she takes thousands of reference photos, which she later uses in her painting studio to create both small and large-scale oil paintings.
Hanson resides in Oregon’s beautiful Willamette Valley, where she paints the local wine country and travels far and wide to chase the light and capture the dramatic colors of nature on her canvases. Her 18,000-square-foot art studio and gallery are open to the public, and visitors can tour Erin’s expansive operations, see her 3D scanning and artwork printing facilities, and maybe even catch the artist at work in her studio.
