Italy, 1962 origin italy period 1962 author giovanni macciotta (1927 – 1993) was an italian painter, a leading figure in turin surrealism in the second half of the twentieth century. Born in turin, he trained at the albertina academy of fine arts under the guidance of enrico paulucci (his main teacher) and, for a year, of felice casorati, graduating in painting. In the 1960s he joined the informal group surfanta (or sur-fanta), a turin surrealist movement founded around 1964, together with artists such as guido de bonis, italo cremona, raffaele pontecorvo, mario molinari, lamberto camerini and others. He actively collaborated with the group's magazine with works and writings until june 1966, contributing to a dreamlike, fairy-tale and poetic surrealism, with fantastic, oriental and narrative elements. His painting is characterized by a surreal and imaginative language: compositions with stylized figures, dreamlike landscapes, organic proliferations, exotic or mythological scenes, rendered with textured brushstrokes, intense colors, and a dreamlike or fairytale atmosphere. He alternated oils on canvas and panel, tempera, and mixed media, maintaining a lyrical and visionary approach, often with evocative titles (e.g., abnormal proliferation, sudamericano impromptu, planters). He exhibited in turin galleries (including davico in 1975, with a catalog introduced by paulucci) and in contexts associated with piedmontese surrealism; his works are present in private collections and have circulated on the italian contemporary art market. His surrealism is rooted in the post-war turin context, influenced by his master paulucci and the local informal/surrealist climate, without belonging to the historical bretonnian surrealism but rather developing an autonomous and poetic variant.
