Resting on an oval base, they are crafted from a single piece of wood with joined arms and forearms, the right arm being missing. Both ancient Asian art sculptures have a worn cotton bodice trimmed with braid. The hair is lacquered and gathered at the back. The arms stretched forward appear to be offering something. The pierced ears suggest earrings were once worn. Traces of blue on the legs, a greenish gray on the body, the palms of the hands are dyed red, and black around the eyes are the surviving polychromes of this fascinating finish. The craquelure and oxidation of the pigments suggest the period. See less
